Energy flows to where attention goes

Ever heard this saying?  Energy flows to where your attention goes?

Pretty easy to understand and we can see this in our mind….if you have a project and you put your attention on it, it will get done.  If you don’t put attention into it, it won’t get done.

If you put your attention on something, it will shift, change and grow.  If your attention is all over the place it is tough to accomplish anything.  Denise and I know this all too well.  If we have multiple projects going at the same time, none of them gets done very fast or very well.  All the projects just take a long time to complete.  But if we work together, it goes much smoother and efficiently.

When I really notice this is if I am watching a movie and on social media….I know…that’s not very enlightening of me 🙂   But, as I do it every so often, I notice I do not have complete attention on the movie or my phone.  Then if someone asks me something, it’s even worse.  I feel like I am all over the place.

I see this in my children for sure.  Maybe I used to do this when I was their age?  However, social media has really bumped up the number of distractions for this generation.

I see their attention is challenged ALL the time.  From emails, to phone texts, to snapchat notifications, to music, etc.  The last thing they can usually pay attention to is when we call them for dinner or respond to something we are asking them to do.  I suppose that could be intentional 🙂

I have taught them about distractions.  There are plenty of distractions all over the place and there always will be.  Life comes down to “training our attention.”

We all have attention and when we put it to something that is for our greatest good, it feeds us as a person.  When I take time to learn something new about myself or for myself, it is an amazing feeling.  When I take time to get my ‘to do’ list done, it feels so great!

When I take a day off and watch movies all day, I pay attention to how I feel at the end of the day, it is definitely different.  It’s not the same good feeling in comparison as when I put time into something I am doing for myself.

So of course the energy piece fits into this blog well because everything is energy.  Whatever you give your attention to, you are giving your energy to as well.    If you have a lot on your mind, and ruminating over it, you are feeding that energy and everything becomes bigger. If you are in chronic pain, and you are home in bed, you probably will feel worse versus if you go out and watch a football game because you are giving your pain more attention in bed versus paying attention to a game.  If you give your attention to distractions all the time, you probably won’t feel like you have much energy for yourself.

This is just the way it is.  Whatever we give our attention, energy flows and grows.  So why not put your attention into good things for yourself?  Be intentional about where your attention is going.  I asked my kids the other day, “Will it change your life if you don’t find out if that tik tok star ended up falling off the ladder?”   You may be telling yourself right now, you feel bad for my children.  HAHA.  I like to keep it real for them, as I do my clients.  I often say, “Whatever you are telling yourself that is bringing more attention to it.  What do you want to do differently?  How do you bring more attention to what you love? What do you want to do?  What brings you happiness?”  Do those things more often and see what happens.
