The stories we tell ourselves

Whenever my environment gets a little chaotic, I feel the pressure. I’m guessing a lot of you are reading this probably can relate. Environment is really important. However, the environment can be looked at in two ways:  Outside and inside.  Outside environment can be cleaned up.  Things can get straightened in the house or straightened at work. Usually when the outside gets cleaned and organized, the pressure on the inside decreases.   But what about the inside? Our internal environment?   What about the stories of the mind that we tell ourselves causing pressure and stress?

This week has been busy and it’s been busy for a while, but I’m feeling it the last few days. So I am taking a peek inside of myself to see what is going on for me.

One of my big internal stories…. I don’t have enough time.   I have understood this about myself for a long time.  When I get jealous of someone (who I perceive has more time), it means I need to take a look inward.    Because I am in tune to this, I know that’s my cue as I’m not making time for myself.

But the story goes beyond just creating time for myself, because I actually do have time for myself.   I usually have multiple hours after work every night, but the story remains that I don’t have enough time.  So I’m reflecting on where that story began in my life,  but more importantly I’m looking at why do I continue to say it which manifests the same story and outcome? What does it do for me?

When I say out loud “I never have enough time for myself” it always feels way worse.   Try it……Try saying it.  See how it feels for you.

However,  If I simply say “I have enough time for what needs to get done”  it feels so much better.

Our best part of being human is our awareness.  Once you have awareness of yourself and your stories, you have a choice and can make it feel different and better for your internal environment.

So when I say I am so busy and overwhelmed with all the things that need to get done, I am stopping the story in its tracks.    I’m playing with “It’ll get done when it gets done.”

It’s interesting because when someone else tells me I have plenty of time,  it doesn’t matter because it’s coming from the outside and inside I am telling myself that I don’t.  It is SO much more important what I tell myself because if I don’t think I have enough time, I will NEVER have enough time no matter what anybody else says in my environment .

Stories can run our lives until you’re aware of them.   But once you’re aware of the stories that you tell yourself that are not doing you good, you have the ability to change them.

This is what I am practicing this week,  so pay attention to the stories that you’re saying and play with it.   Talk it out with someone,  talk it out with yourself,  sit and reflect,  and then see what shifts.

Telling a new story in the flow,
