Making a Difference
If we are lucky there are people that come into our lives that make a positive impact. For me, I am lucky because one of my people was my sister Denise. She will never know how much she taught me and how she forever changed me to be better and do better. Because of her, I understand the difference between having an open heart and a closed heart. I know the importance of living in the present, not living in the past or worrying about the future. Because of her, I practice meditation, self-love, and self-care. Yes, I say practice because I do fall short. When I fall short I can give myself grace because she taught me that I do not need to be perfect. Because of Denise, I am better about pausing before responding rather than reacting and having regrets. She was one of the people that I could talk to about anything and she would listen, offer advice, and love me no matter what. I could write so much more about how I am a better person because she was a teacher to me with so much wisdom. I regret not telling her this when she was alive.
On the contrary, I have had people in my life who have said and done things that were unkind, hurtful, and created a very negative experience for me. I do not need to go into any detail because we probably all have had those people in our lives at some time.
The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip.
You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just ponder on them. Just read it straight through, and you’ll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.
These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies.
Awards tarnish …
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Easier?
The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money … or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.
As you read through the second list were you able to put a name to these people? I hope you have been blessed by having people come into your life who have helped you navigate a difficult time in your life, taught you meaningful life lessons, helped you realize the gift that you are, lifted you up, loved you where you are at, listened to you and asked you what you need? Also, people who have helped you realize your dreams and offered support.
I have read that we are a combination of the 5 people we spend most of our time with. Who are they for you? Do they lift you up or drag you down?
Shifting the focus on what is good for us, I am wondering how often we take a look at how WE show up for other people. When we get the opportunity to be that person who can make a difference, do we show up, or miss the opportunity altogether? Do we step out of our comfort zone? Do we share our time and talents? Do we spread kindness, compassion, love and understanding? Do we give that needed hug? Do we give a listening ear?
Spreading positive energy will shift our world. Each of us gets to choose what kind of energy we are putting into the Universe every day. We don’t need to be famous, or wealthy. We don’t have to have a title or boast huge accomplishments to be the change.
