LISTEN, my 2023 word

I am in a business where listening to clients and students is very important.  Every day I listen and try to reflect back what clients are saying so they can help empower themselves.   Or I listen to questions from students and try to help them understand what I am teaching.  When I told my friends online this was my word of the year, many people told me I was already a great listener.

But the word LISTEN was a perfect word for me.   It is about listening to myself and to my I AM.

Throughout my life, I have put more emphasis on what people thought I should do, should feel, should think, than how I feel, think and do.   I guess that is exactly what a “people pleaser” does.  Everyone else’s feelings and thoughts were more important than my own and I just went along with things for a REALLY long time.

One day, I woke up to an understanding that I was tired of everyone else’s opinions and feelings and thoughts being more important than mine.  It was the beginning of my journey, beginning to listen to myself more than other people around me.

Fast forward a decade of practicing this, I find myself listening to myself and trusting myself more and more.  But then this word showed up again.  It truly is about listening to my I AM.

You may have heard rumblings of this phrase I AM over the past few months from various informational pieces we have sent out from Healing Waters.  But I am here today to try to describe what an amazing, expansive, and empowering place this I AM is.

The best description I can muster is this; the I AM is my knowingness.  Knowing that I am a beautiful, authentic, loving human being.  When I tap into this knowingness, there is a sense of peace and calmness.

Do this for yourself right now.  Take a minute, close your eyes and feel into that knowingness of yourself.

Now, do I ALWAYS feel this I AM?  No, not all the time, but I keep practicing.   I practice by remembering my I AM (just like you just did).  I practice by doing things that I love.  I practice by going outside and REALLY take in the vastness and beauty while walking at Lake Elmo park.  I practice by connecting with my friends and family and loving them.  I practice by listening to my I AM.

I believe the I AM is here to guide us along this journey we call life.  It is helping us trust ourselves, love ourselves and love others.   But when we don’t listen, we can get a bit lost.  Lost in other people’s opinions, lost in what to do next, lost in who you think you are.

That’s why I keep listening.  Listening to my I AM is one of the most meaningful lessons I have learned so far in my life.  Because when I do really listen, I AM is there to help me get clarity into what I need to do, where I need to go, who I need to connect with, who I AM.

Connecting with your I AM
